In March 2009, Nancy, 71, had fallen for the seventh time in two months and this time she thought she broke her leg.  Concerned that her mother had suffered a stroke and possibly a broken leg, Nancy’s daughter called 911. Once Nancy arrived at WRMC, it was quickly determined that her leg was not broke and she did not suffer a strong, nor any other disease related to the heart.  This began a long and heartbreaking process to determine exactly what was wrong with Nancy.

Over the next several months, Nancy saw many different physicians with countless diagnostic tests, but continued to spiral downward.  She was now in a wheelchair and physically unable to take care of herself.  With great reservation, her family decided to put their young mother in Marquardt Manor so she could have round-the-clock, rehabilitative care.  Nancy says, “Living in a nursing home was extremely depressing, especially at the age of 71.”

After four months at Marquardt Manor and no progress, she was referred to spine surgeon, Dr Zdeblick. After an extensive MRI of the spine, Nancy was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a debilitating narrowing of the spine.  They wasted no time in having surgery, scheduling it the very next day.

Immediately after the surgery, Nancy’s hand was back to normal, no more clinched fist.  This was a turning point for her and she knew that she was going to get better this time.

Today, Nancy is completely recovered; she can walk and lives in her own home again.  She is very thankful for the help that Dr Zdeblick gave to her.  Nancy says, “I have my life back, no more nursing home or wheelchair!  In fact, I take care of my very active three year old grandson five days a week.  Something I never thought would be possible just a few short months ago.  I am very thankful that I found this miracle worker”
