Watertown Regional Medical Center Heart & Vascular Center has introduced a Nurse Navigator role to help guide patients and their families through their healthcare experience.
“We work hard to make sure each patient - - and their family - - has not only the best possible medical outcome, but also the best possible experience,” says Heart & Vascular Nurse Navigator Laurie Purtell, RN.
Hospitals around the country have been adding patient-navigation services in recent years, as healthcare organizations place increasing emphasis on the coordination of care. Watertown Regional Medical Center (WRMC) is proud to be among the first in the region to provide Nurse Navigators as a standard part of their care model in several areas.
The role of the Nurse Navigator changes depending on each patient’s unique needs. At no additional charge, Navigators strive to develop a personal relationship with patients and families; create a seamless healthcare experience; and ultimately guide patients to optimal health.
Norma Sterwald of Jefferson is a patient of Cardiologist Vik Chhokar, MD and recently underwent a catheter procedure at WRMC. She appreciated having a Nurse Navigator as part of her care team.
“She’s there for you,” says Norma of Nurse Navigator Laurie Purtell. “She’s a very caring person.”
Nurse Navigators can help smooth out the sometimes-confusing healthcare process, setting up follow-up appointments and answering questions about medication.
“Laurie came and she talked to me and she kept track of things,” Norma continues. “I couldn’t have done it. There was no way. Someone had to do things for me.”
Nurse Navigators ensure that each patient’s unique needs are met, answering questions and concerns. They’re a constant, reassuring presence before, during and after a procedure.
Nurse Navigators also assist with the transition from hospital to home, staying in contact with patients after they leave the hospital, and ensuring the patient and family understand their follow-up plan of care.
“Laurie will call to see how I’m doing. She tells me that if I need anything I should call her. She keeps good track of me.” Watertown Regional Medical Center also provides Nurse Navigators in Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, Women’s Health, and to hospitalized patients.
